Requirements by Year

Requirement Details

To complete the University Honors curriculum students must fulfill all of the requirements below. The annual course requirement has some flexible options. Specifically, students can choose to take two University Honors courses in one of their freshman or sophomore years to allow increased flexibility in their junior or senior years. Students who plan to graduate in less than four years either because they are graduating early or because they transferred or began the honors program after their freshman year must schedule a meeting with the Director of University Honors to develop a personalized plan to complete the curriculum.

Freshman year requirements

  1. Attend University Honors freshman orientation meeting
  2. Complete one UH course experience
  3. Complete one UH non-course experience and submit a reflection paper
  4. Attend Capstone advising meeting
  5. Submit UH Capstone Discussion Summary detailing a discussion with a faculty member about their scholarship
  6. Attend at least three Perspective Events and submit reflection papers for each (these events can include "Pizza with the Prof" networking events).  
  7. Attend Senior Capstone presentations
  8. Maintain a U of M cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher

Sophomore year requirements

  1. Complete one UH course experience
  2. Complete one UH non-course experience and submit a reflection paper
  3. Attend sophomore Capstone advising meeting
  4. Submit UH Capstone Discussion Summary detailing a discussion with a faculty member about their scholarship
  5. Attend at least three Perspective Events and submit reflection papers for each (these events can include "Pizza with the Prof" networking events)  
  6. Attend Senior Capstone Presentations
  7. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher


Junior year requirements

  1. Complete one UH course experience
  2. Complete one UN non-course experience and submit a reflection paper
  3. Attend junior Capstone advising meeting
  4. Decide on a faculty mentor, complete, and submit the UH Capstone Project Proposal Form
  5. Attend at least three Perspective Events and submit reflection papers for each (these events can include "Pizza with the Prof" networking events)  
  6. Attend Senior Capstone Presentations
  7. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher


Senior year requirements

  1. Complete one UH course experience
  2. Complete one UH non-course experience and submit reflection paper***
  3. Attend senior group advising meeting
  4. Attend at least three Perspective Events and submit reflection papers for each (these events can include "Pizza with the Prof" networking events)  
  5. Complete University Honors Capstone Project
  6. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above

*You may choose in which semester to complete your course, non-course, and event requirements. You could do both in a single semester or split them across semesters, but you must complete requirements in the year specified.

**You will receive a notice each semester from the program director indicating your progress toward completion of program requirements.

***Faculty agreement to work as a mentor on a UH capstone project counts as Faculty-Guided Research category for the non-course experience during the senior year.
